This photo was taken in about 3 minutes. My friend, Natalie and I walked outside and found a little spot on campus to take the picture. I was taking this photo for our color printing weekly assignment; a black and white portrait. I took her to the shade of a tree next to a white building that was in the sun. She was getting some fill on the right side of her face from that building, but the light was soft from the shade of the tree. There is also a really nice separation from the background on the left side of her face. The sliver of light separating her from the background simply was from a break in the leaves that framed her face beautifully. I actually like this picture in black and white better because it makes her freckles pop. I am proud of and love this photo of my beautiful friend.
I just have to say… I had my hair up all messy and really was not feeling very pretty at all but you did amazing to make sure I looked good! Great job on the black and white conversion too! my freckles and eyes look awesome.

I find it interesting how some of the editing tools we are learning can hide some things and pull out other things, (like freckles!) so dramatically. I love the play of light and I understand it better since you described the details of it so well. That light on the left is almost like a rim light – really nicely done. I like the soft mottling that the leaves form on her shirt – that also speaks to how well you made the shot, because it shows that you took it under a canopy and that you were able to manage the challenges of that shifting light. And I also appreciate the fall-off of focus, especially going from the crystal sharpness of her eyes to the soft, yet defined shapes of her earrings. Really lovely picture that captures a really lovely subject.

I really love this photograph of Natalie. She is so pretty, and the way you shot this, really made her eyes and her freckles pop. This type of photography is what I really like. Thanks for sharing this image.
